Penn School

A sad picture of the bulldozer levelling the school. The school itself stood for over 100 years and was originally built for the children of the black families that settled in Westport after the civil war. It was the first black school west of the Mississippi. It was destroyed by fire in 1969. The location of the old school is now a memorial park with a plaque to commemorate the school. (Look here)

Charles Sumner Elementary School

Opened in 1906, the Morse Elementary School became the Charles Sumner Elementary School in September 1927 when it became a school for Black children. It was destroyed by fire in 1964.

Lincoln High School (R.T. Coles)

Originally called Lincoln High School, in 1936 it became R.T. Coles Vocational and Junior High. Located at 1835 Tracy
